«Exitio est avidum mare nautis»: la «miserrima naufragorum fortuna» nell’antico Mediterraneo

Maritime trade always played an important role in the Ancient Mediterranean area, but storms, piracy and other forms of pillaging put this traffics at risk: all these variables made the sea a very dangerous place for the Greeks and the Romans. The main goal of this research is to analyse the problems connected with shipwrecks and their relations to known economic and social situations of the ancient world.

Oggetto della ricerca è l’indagine dei fondamenti antropologici, geografici ed economici delle pratiche predatorie ai danni dei naviganti. Si analizzerà, inoltre, la stretta relazione che intercorre tra le forme di concettualizzazione e di rappresentazione dell’‘altro’ nell’antichità mediterranea, e l’applicazione della cosiddetta ‘law of salvage’.
