The fragile city: exclusion strategies and new forms of participation from below The contemporary city is overwhelmed by unprecedented processes of separa- tion, commodification and urban fragmentation. Despite being perceived as the place of an interminable contradiction, between its folds and its interstices, real “spaces of hope” take shape within which the new urban social movements fight against gentrification, commodification, forms of exclusion and the dramatic ef- fects of the economic policies of austerity. Through forms of resistance from be- low, the city is trasformed into a field of social and political struggle from which to claim a new and more complex right to the city.
