L’eredità del passato. Quali suggerimenti possiamo oggi trarre dal tempo trascorso? Cosa ci può insegnare la storia? Legacy of the past. What advice can we get today from thetime spent on? What can history teach us?

The construction of thought and especially of creative activities depends on our ability to ask questions, to interact with what constitutes our context, our past. Without the presence of men questioning it, the territory – the landscape and its archaeology – is always indeterminate, unconscious, neither beautiful nor ugly, without boundaries, without centre. It is a place of disorientation of the mind. We, as active spectators, have the power to complete its metamorphosis, to let the territory become mindful form. Listening to the echo of the past, enables us to develope an education that allows us to understand the surroundings, a critical ability to question reality that marks the way to «reach the root from which» the meaning of things is generated: «reaching the roots means to reach the foundation, [...] the silence from which no word is separated».

La costruzione del pensiero e soprattutto delle attività creative dipende dalla nostra abilità a porre domande, ad interagire con ciò che costituisce il nostro contesto vitale, ovvero il nostro passato. In questo senso il territorio (il paesaggio e la sua archeologia), in assenza dell’uomo che lo interroga, è sempre indeterminato, inconsapevole, né bello né brutto, senza confini, senza centro. Luogo dello spaesamento della mente. Attende solo da noi, dagli occhi che vedono, il compiersi della sua metamorfosi, il suo completamento e il suo divenire forma. L’educazione a comprendere le cose che ci circondano (quindi la capacità critica di interrogare la realtà) ascoltando l’eco del passato che innerva e permea il sensibile (quel moto discendente verso il linguaggio primo) segna la via per «accedere alla radice da cui si dipartono» le ragioni espressive delle cose: «scendere alle radici significa giungere al fondamento, [...] al silenzio da cui nessuna parola si è separata»
