The early medieval city of Rome shimmers by many monuments, but no others than mosaics make the artistic production of the city unique. This paper aims to examine a part of these mosaics, and more specifically those commissioned by Paschal I: the golden inscriptions on deep-blue field. Because we are at the first steps of our research, in this text we don’t go beyond the examination of the textual contain of the inscriptions, the study of the shape of the letters, the technical analyse of the mosaics and, finally, the theoretical approaches revision of the scholars who have preceded us. Our goal is to achieve one solid base to study these inscriptions in a complex way in its context.
