Franz Liszt was very interested in figurative arts and wrote a lot about them, especially in the Lettres d’un bachelier en musique, published on the «Revue et Gazette musicale de Paris» and «L’Artiste» from 1837 to 1839. First, Liszt’s statements about value and symbolic meaning of masterpieces as Raffaello’s Santa Cecilia were examined; from this examination results that in any case Liszt tried to relate pictures to music, particularly in what concerns their structure. Moreover, Liszt affirms that music, differently from painting, is incapable of depict anything, music could only express, in particular human feelings. From this standpoint, many analytical approaches to the Liszt’s compositions related to visual arts may be reconsidered.
