Firstly, it presents the pressing need of the Church to tackle reform of its own legislation. Next, it presents the eminent character of Pope Pius X as the main sponsor of the reform. Then the aims of this codification effort are explained as a response to certain historical demands together with the various new provisions. Finally, although they do not detract importance from the appearance of the Code of 1917, some potential defects and disadvantages that the codification of Pius-Benedict might have caused are indicated.
