Il palazzo degli Anguillara a Trastevere. Cronaca di un restauro

The architectural complex, property of the Anguillara family, consisting of the palace and of the tower located in Trastevere, houses the Historic Association Casa di Dante; today, it is an isolated building characterized by significant historical features with reference to the late Roman Middle Ages. Clearly excluded from the original urban surroundings, it now appears de-contextualized. As a result of the restoration work, the structure reveals a precise stylistic choice aimed at enhancing its ancient architectural characteristics, criticized by contemporaries as excessive and, in such a manner, arbitrarily reconstructive. The building was selected as case-study for the Restoration Studio Course of the Architectural Sciences Bachelor’s Degree, held by Roma Tre University. That occasion gave the opportunity to develop the subject, by a targeted historical archival research, deepening the cultural direction, the succession of design proposals and the operational choices basing and allowing the present architectural configuration. The paper aims at illustrating the studies carried out, including main goals, chronicling the events and reconstructing the work reasons, illustrative of the contemporary restoration practice in Rome. In this frame, clearly emerges as the project was informed by urban planning -related to Rome as the new capital of the Italian State-, and by public opinion, especially by the cultural policy carried out by intellectuals, namely members of the Associazione Artistica fra i Cultori di Architettura. The restoration work is attributed to Augusto Fallani, who supervised it from 1896 till 1902; he created architectural solutions intended to artistically enhance the building, according to the spirit of his time.

Il complesso architettonico costituito dal palazzo e dalla torre degli Anguillara a Trastevere, al cui interno ha sede la storica associazione Casa di Dante, si configura oggi come un elemento isolato dal forte connotato storico riferibile al tardo medioevo romano. La struttura palesa una precisa scelta stilistica volta a esaltarne i caratteri architettonici antichi, quale risultato di un intervento di restauro che fu, già all’epoca, criticato poiché reputato eccessivamente e forse un po’ arbitrariamente ricostruttivo. L’edificio è stato oggetto di studio nell’ambito del Laboratorio di Restauro della Laurea triennale in Scienze dell’Architettura dell’Università degli Studi Roma Tre (2), ed in quella occasione ho avuto modo di approfondire, attraverso mirate ricerche storico archivistiche, gli indirizzi culturali e la successione di proposte progettuali e scelte operative che hanno istruito e poi dato adito alla configurazione architettonica odierna. Di questi studi si riporta qui una sintesi con l’obiettivo, attraverso la cronaca degli eventi, di ricomporre le ragioni di un intervento che è esemplare della prassi di restauro in uso a Roma in quegli anni.
