Inseparable from trust, hope is one of the three radical dimensions of the human being, together with belief and love. In this paper, philosophical reflections on the theme of hope are intertwined with scientific investigations, which show how, in addition to the anthropology of hope, there is also a physiology of hope, which manifests itself in the situation of illness or even near death. Since the link between hope, physical well-being and healing is evident, the need for healthcare personnel to be trained in what has been defined as hope-inspiring competence is emphasized.

Abstract

Inseparable from trust, hope is one of the three radical dimensions of the human being, together with belief and love. In this paper, philosophical reflections on the theme of hope are intertwined with scientific investigations, which show how, in addition to the anthropology of hope, there is also a physiology of hope, which manifests itself in the situation of illness or even near death. Since the link between hope, physical well-being and healing is evident, the need for healthcare personnel to be trained in what has been defined as hope-inspiring competence is emphasized.
