The figure of the pícaro, and the picaresque more generally, represent in Fernando Fernán-Gómez's vital and artistic career a constant presence that gives rise to various forms of thematic and formal reworking, as well as to very interesting phenomena of intermedial transfer and self-rewriting. This article aims to emphasize the strategic role that the theatrical reworking of his versions of the character and picaresque material plays in the development of these dynamics, even in the most autobiographical facets of the author and director's creations.
