Media|Processes. Moving Images Across Interface Aesthetics and Gestural Policies

The debate around moving images, the devices, and the infrastructures ensuring their circulation has been the subject of many studies in the area of film and media studies. Closely linked with a range of neighbouring disciplines such as aesthetics and media pragmatics, cultural and visual studies, this debate explores a number of phenomena that unfold in art and entertainment spaces, and which impact on everyday life, for example by influencing the design and use of diverse domestic technologies. In this scenario, interfaces – be they screens or else – take on a major role in the contemporary “iconosphere”. They represent a liminal zone whereby the relationship between body and technology transits. Interfaces can then be seen as the area of connection between physical world and media space, becoming itself a place of encounter. The aim of this journal issue is to open up a space for interdisciplinary reflection around the processing and operation of interfaces, seen not only as digital objects but also and primarily as a set of open, repeatable and reworkable practices. Collected articles investigate the aesthetics of interfaces, and the relative gestural policies, taking into consideration the functional, cultural, social, and techno-material aspects around which the relationship between the subject and the interface takes shape.

Il dibattito che coinvolge le immagini in movimento, i dispositivi e le infrastrutture che ne garantiscono la circolazione segna ormai da anni numerose ricerche nell’ambito dei film e media studies. Collocato in stretto dialogo con discipline e prospettive di studio limitrofe che vanno dall’estetica, alla pragmatica dei media e, ancora, agli studi culturali a quelli sulla cultura visuale, questo dibattito investe un fenomeno che si estende dagli spazi dell’arte a quelli dell’intrattenimento fino all’uso quotidiano di molte tecnologie domestiche. In questo scenario, le interfacce, siano esse legate a schermi o altro, assumono un ruolo di primaria importanza nell’iconosfera contemporanea. Esse si costituiscono come una vera e propria zona liminale attraverso la quale transita la relazione corpo-tecnologia. In tal senso, l’interfaccia mette in connessione il “mondo reale” e lo spazio mediale, diventando essa stessa il luogo della relazione tra i due. Questo dossier si propone dunque di aprire uno spazio di riflessione interdisciplinare attorno alla processualità e operatività delle interfacce, intese non solo come oggetti digitali ma anche e soprattutto come insieme di pratiche aperte, replicabili e rielaborative. Gli articoli raccolti indagano le estetiche dell’interfaccia e le relative politiche della gestualità, prendendo in considerazione tanto gli aspetti funzionali, quanto quelli culturali, socioculturali e tecnologico-materiali intorno ai quali viene a configurarsi la relazione tra soggetto e interfaccia.
