The Russian Odyssey of James Joyce (1922-2022) · This paper provides an overview of the diffusion and the reception of Joyce’s work in Soviet, émigré and post-Soviet Russia, made peculiar by the censorship to which it has long been subjected. As will be shown, the dialogue of Russian artists with the Irish writer has taken on contrasting forms and, at the same time, has been creatively reinterpreted. Emblematic of this trend is the case of the director Sergei Eisenstein, briefly presented here, who entered into a fruitful discourse with Joyce, from whose work he drew inspiration for his own filmic method.
