O Livro de Alda de Abel Botelho: degenerescência e patologia social no Portugal finissecular

O artigo propõe uma análise do romance O livro de Alda (1895) do escritor português Abel Botelho a partir do conceito de degenerescência assim como foi teorizado por Bénédict-Augustin Morel. Nesta perspetiva, as cartas que compõem o tecido narrativo da obra de Botelho parecem concentrar os pressupostos ideológicos de toda a série Patologia Social, representando, através da figura de Alda, a degradante visão oitocentista sobre a mulher e expressando, ao mesmo tempo, uma crítica à decadência e a corrupção moral da sociedade portuguesa finissecular.

The article proposes an analysis of the novel O livro de Alda (1895) by the Portuguese writer Abel Botelho based on the concept of degeneration as theorised by Bénédict-Augustin Morel. From this perspective, the letters through which the narrative in Botelho’s work develops seem to concentrate the ideological assumptions of the entire series Patologia social, representing, through the figure of Alda, the degrading Nineteenth-century vision of women and criticising, at the same time, the decadence and moral corruption of fin-de-siècle Portuguese society.
