Die Rolle der Päpstlichen Lateranuniversität und die Normalisierung des theologischen Denkens vor dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil

At the time of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, Italian theology was still unaware of the need for renewal. The weighty legacy of the magisterial condemnation of Modernism ended up, over time, by denying the historical evolution of the dogmas and the usefulness itself of historical research, still deemed to the point of degenerating into relativism. By considering the role played by the Pontifical Lateran University and the journal «Divinitas», both particularly representative of “Roman” theology, this paper aims at analysing certain homogenising academic forms of theological thought which, on the eve of Vatican II, intended to steadfastly conserve the neo-scholastic tradition and the primacy of the papal magisterium, to be interpreted as a block of ahistorical and indisputable truths.
