The present contribution sets out to reconstruct, through the analysis of administrative documents and correspondence, the method adopted by Fernanda Wittgens in the management of the Pinacoteca di Brera between 1950 and 1957. Her commitment to the realization of the “living museum”, the transition from “archive” to “school” museum as well as her contacts with the American museum world are discussed here. The promotion of this approach was so central to Wittgens that she chose to abandon her role as Superintendent of the Galleries of Lombardy to devote herself entirely to animating the life of the museum.
