L’evento e la sua ombra: percezione, ricordo, essere, stato

The article discusses the relationship between the past and the present. According to the common perception of time, the difference between the past and the present would be ontological: while the present is (it corresponds to Being), the past was (it is not any more). In conflict with this thesis and in agreement with the special theory of relativity, the author argues that all we can know belongs to the past, whereas the present (as well as the future) is unknowable. In order to strengthen his statement, the author investigates human cognition, focusing on the difference between material sensations and mental products. He also deals with the ontological status of the past, trying to clarify why we can only know the past (in this context, he proposes a new interpretation of Parmenides’ definition of Being). On the basis of these arguments, the author concludes that the difference between the past and the present should be considered as gnoseological.

L’articolo verte sul rapporto fra passato e presente. Secondo l’impressione comune, la differenza fra passato e presente sarebbe di tipo ontologico: se il presente è (corrisponde all’essere), il passato è stato (non è più). In contrapposizione a questa tesi e in accordo con la teoria della relatività speciale, l’autore sostiene che tutto ciò che possiamo conoscere appartiene al passato, mentre il presente (così come il futuro) risulta inconoscibile. Per corroborare la propria asserzione, l’autore indaga la cognizione umana, soffermandosi sulla differenza fra sensazioni materiali e prodotti mentali. Egli affronta anche lo status ontologico del passato, provando a chiarire perché possiamo conoscere soltanto il passato (in questo contesto, propone una nuova interpretazione della definizione di essere data da Parmenide). Sulla base di questi argomenti, l’autore conclude che la differenza fra passato e presente dovrebbe essere posta sul piano gnoseologico.
