This critical note addresses the ideological and editorial trajectory of Vladimir Čertkov in the broader context of Tolstoyanism and the history of pacifism. Taking as its point of departure the recent volume Storia di un’ossessione: Lev Tolstoj e Vladimir Čertkov (2022) by Roberta De Giorgi, the article reflects on the complex interplay between spiritual radicalism, political dissent, and publishing strategies in the late imperial and early Soviet periods. Particular attention is paid to Čertkov’s role in shaping the transnational image of Tolstoy and to the tensions between charismatic authority, textual control, and the ethics of nonviolence.
