Cars represent a symbol of the Italian economic miracle that, between the end of the Fifties and the beginning of the Sixties, contributed to the radical transformation of the nation’s culture and society. Analysing Il sorpasso (D. Risi, 1963), La visita (A. Pietrangeli, 1962) and La notte brava (M. Bolognini, 1959), and chiefly taking into account the critical reception of the films at that time, this essay investigates how Italian cinema of those years describes the relation between the increasing diffusion of these goods in the country and the appearance of new identities.

Abstract
Cars represent a symbol of the Italian economic miracle that, between the end of the Fifties and the beginning of the Sixties, contributed to the radical transformation of the nation’s culture and society. Analysing Il sorpasso (D. Risi, 1963), La visita (A. Pietrangeli, 1962) and La notte brava (M. Bolognini, 1959), and chiefly taking into account the critical reception of the films at that time, this essay investigates how Italian cinema of those years describes the relation between the increasing diffusion of these goods in the country and the appearance of new identities.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
