The Aesthetics of Performance and the Science of Theatre. Notes for a Reflection on Theatre Historiography and the Study of the Contemporary This essay aims to be a reflection on the way in which we tend to reason scientifically about contemporary theatre, starting from the analysis of the hermeneutic proposals put forward by two important German books recently translated and published in Italy: Erika Fischer-Lichte, Ästhetik des Performativen (2004), It. transl. Estetica del performativo, Roma, Carocci 2014 and Hans-Thies Lehmann, Postdramatisches Theater (1999), It. transl. Il teatro postdrammatico, Cue Press, Bologna 2017. At the centre of the argument is the analysis of the methodologies and the point of view used by these authors, who observe theatre on the basis of aesthetics, in comparison with the perspectives developed by some scholars from the Italian area – including Fabrizio Cruciani, Claudio Meldolesi and Ferdinando Taviani, who since the 1960s have claimed an “internal” approach to the study of theatre, and the possibility of developing its own specific philosophy of knowledge.

Abstract
At the centre of the argument is the analysis of the methodologies and the point of view used by these authors, who observe theatre on the basis of aesthetics, in comparison with the perspectives developed by some scholars from the Italian area – including Fabrizio Cruciani, Claudio Meldolesi and Ferdinando Taviani, who since the 1960s have claimed an “internal” approach to the study of theatre, and the possibility of developing its own specific philosophy of knowledge.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
