Nicosia Elefteria Square

A project with strong symbolic value, a uniting space for the community as the initial phase for an urban plan that aims at a reunification of the entire city. This is Elefteria Square, in Nicosia, Cyprus, a capital that is doubly divided: both by the medieval fortifications that divide the oldest part of the city from the modern neighborhoods outside the walls, and by the “Green Line”, which not only divides the city but also the entire island of Cyprus into a southern part with a Greek Cypriot majority and a northern part with a Turkish Cypriot majority. Signed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the design of the new square seems to want to once again extend the sense of “garden” in a contemporary key, thinking of a public place that lends itself to different uses.

Un progetto dal forte valore simbolico, uno spazio di unione per la comunità come fase iniziale per un piano urbanistico che punta a riunificare l’intera città: è Elefteria Square, a Nicosia, Cipro, una capitale doppiamente divisa, sia dalle fortificazioni medievali che dividono la parte più antica della città dai quartieri moderni fuori le mura sia dalla “Green Line”, che separa non solo la città ma tutta l’isola in una parte meridionale a maggioranza greco-cipriota e in una settentrionale a maggioranza turco-cipriota. A firma di Zaha Hadid Architects, il progetto della nuova piazza sembra voler estendere ancora una volta il senso del “giardino” in chiave contemporanea pensando a un luogo pubblico che si presta a usi diversi.
