La fabrication des objets de dévotion en Palestine, de l’époque moderne au début du xixe siècle

In recent decades, devotional objects have attracted increasing interest among researchers in various disciplines. To traditional studies by art historians and curators, who have been attentive to this type of artefact for a long time, have been recently added to the more historical approach a wide number of studies, which are most often part of the material culture. In their trail, this interdisciplinary contribution introduces some new acquisitions of the MuCEM (Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean) of Marseille, from an overview of studies dedicated to the production of objects of devotion in Palestine. Drawing in particular on works of modern history and art historians, this article discusses the connection between the long history of objects, from the origins of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and the innovations of the modern age, at technical and material level.
