The article is focused on the relationship between politics and pu- blic administration from an Italian perspective. The A. summarily analyses the institutional pattern and related institutional practices, starting from the enduring primacy of politics over administration, to the normative establi- shment in 1993 of a (formal) principle to distinguish politics and administra- tion. Moreover, the article tries to look ahead at the necessary (substantive) equilibrium between politics and administration, which should be sought in order to remodel the public decision-making chain by making it oriented to administrative effectiveness.
