Pio XII, la guerra e i silenzi in un libro di David I. Kertzer

The affair of Pius XII's silences has always aroused much controversy that goes beyond historiography. The opening of the archives of the Pius’s pontificate in the Vatican in March 2020, albeit very late, opens the possibility that historians will find themselves discussing the documents. Some recent publications have begun to grapple with the new documentation, such as that of David Kertzer, A Pope at War. The book have several limits due to the partiality of the reconstruction, the lack of knowledge of the bibliography on the subject and the lack of a long-term perspective that inserts the affair of Pius XII in the church history and that compares with the great historiographical nodes of the history of Christianity between the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. All this make the book superficial, with no possibility of getting out of the sterile controversy between accusers and apologists.

La vicenda dei silenzi di Pio XII ha sempre suscitato molte polemiche che vanno al di là della storiografia. L’apertura degli archivi del pontificato di Pio XII in Vaticano nel marzo 2020, pur molto tardiva, apre la possibilità che gli storici tronino a confrontarsi sui documenti. Alcune recenti pubblicazioni hanno cominciato a confrontarsi con la nuova documentazione, come quella di David Kertzer, Un papa in guerra. Il libro ha diversi limiti a causa della parzialità della ricostruzione, della poca conoscenza della bibliografia sull’argomento e della mancanza di una prospettiva di lungo periodo che inserisca la vicenda di Pio XII nella storia della chiesa e che si confronti con i grandi nodi storiografici della storia del cristianesimo tra Otto e Novecento. Tutto questo rende il libro superficiale, senza possibilità di uscire dalla sterile polemica tra accusatori e apologeti.
