Abstract

Oppian (2nd cent. CE) includes a hymn to Eros at the beginning of Book 4 of his poem Halieutica, dedicated to fishing. The aim of this paper is to examine it from a philological-literary point of view in order to better understand its structure, composition, and allusions to the earlier literary tradition. In particular, the analysis focuses on the symptoms of love and traces correspondences with Sappho (especially fr. 31 V.) and Apollonius Rhodius.
