This essay investigates the relationship between labor and women in the postwar period by analyzing the case study of Viterbo’s Province through the documents of the pci’s Provincial Federation. By adopting a gender perspective, it is possible to provide a different picture of the economic miracle that re-evaluates the role of women inside and outside the household. What emerges is that entering the productive world did not automatically mean greater emancipation: the women of Viterbo area kept on devaluating their work by judging it complementary and supplementary to that of their husbands despite the importance of their contribution to the development of some industrial sectors
