Abstract
The ‘natural history of destruction’ is a term typical of Sebald, which he introduces in the context of his Zurich lectures (1997): The ruined landscape of post-war Germany, battered by death and misery, is described as a natural landscape in some post-war novels (Böll, Kasack). However, Sebald's prose is far removed from the discourse of rubble literature, and his description of the regenerative forces at work in society immediately after catastrophes does not serve any narrative of a new beginning. Rather, the connections he establishes between individual scenes of human and natural disasters allegorise a general process: a history of universal, ongoing and unstoppable destruction in which humankind has always participated through oppression and technological progress. The catastrophe as an unremembered state and the disappearance through progressive miniaturisation are examined here as modes of representation of the natural history of destruction.File in questo prodotto:
