The process of transition from Soviet Ukraine to an independent state represents a crucial moment in the construction of contemporary Ukraine. The present essay aims to provide some interpretive keys that help to grasp the complexity of a non-linear and sometimes contradictory history. The starting point is the consideration of the “plural” character of Ukraine, a borderland whose territories have followed different historical paths.
