This essay examines the new interpretation of the Graffito of the Commodilla Catacomb (first half of the 9th century) proposed by Emilia Calaresu, that links the inscription to the image of the fresco on whose frame it was engraved. The authors consider that the liturgical interpretation of the text provided in 1966 by Francesco Sabatini remains more likely, although revised and corrected in light of Calaresu’s valid objection regarding the fact that the Graffito is not located on the wall to which the altar was adjacent.
