« Possumus non loqui » : le Pape Pie XII, l’épiscopat français et l’indépendance algérienne

Au sein du tableau complexe des événements qui ont conduit l'Afrique française vers l'indépendance, les relations entre la France, le Saint-Siège et les épiscopats, tant métropolitains que coloniaux, ont joué un rôle crucial. Cet article s'emploie à démêler les fils enchevêtrés de ces interactions, révélant les tensions latentes qui traversaient l'Église catholique française pendant la guerre d'Algérie. L'ouverture des archives du pontificat de Pie XII en 2020 permet de dévoiler les frictions longtemps dissimulées derrière un silence officiel, notamment celles entre l’archidiocèse d'Alger et celui de Lyon quant aux enjeux politiques et sociaux du conflit algérien. Ces tensions éclairent d'un jour nouveau la position ambivalente de l'Église catholique, y compris la Nonciature de Paris et la Secrétairerie d'État du Vatican, tenaillée entre le soutien à l'ordre colonial et la volonté de préserver son rôle missionnaire face aux aspirations indépendantistes, tout en ménageant ses relations avec la France en pleine transition politique de la IVe à la Ve République. En s'affranchissant des discours officiels et en s'appuyant sur des sources primaires inédites, cette étude invite à dépasser les schémas simplistes et à saisir la complexité des relations entre institutions religieuses et pouvoirs politiques dans le contexte post-colonial de l'Algérie, à l'approche des Accords d'Évian. Embedded within the intricate framework of events that propelled French Africa towards independence, the relationships between France, the Holy See, and both metropolitan and colonial episcopates played a pivotal role. This article delves into the interwoven threads of these interactions, unveiling the latent tensions that traversed the French Catholic Church during the Algerian War. The opening of Pope Pius XII's archives in 2020 sheds light on long-concealed frictions masked by official silence, particularly those between the Archdioceses of Algiers and Lyon in the face of the Algerian conflict's political and social stakes. These tensions highlight the ambivalent stance of the Catholic Church, including the Nunciature of Paris and the Vatican Secretariat of State, caught in a delicate balancing act between upholding the colonial order and safeguarding its missionary endeavors in the face of independence aspirations, all while maintaining its relations with France amidst its political transition from the Fourth to the Fifth Republic. By breaking free from official narratives and drawing upon previously untapped primary sources, this study invites us to move beyond simplistic schemas and grasp the complexity of relations between religious institutions and political powers in the postcolonial context of Algeria as the Évian Accords approached.
