This article examines Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain and Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf through the lens of early twentiethcentury media revolution. Drawing on an intermedial perspective, it demonstrates how both novels not only address the impact of technical media (cinema, radio, gramophone) on their protagonists, but also incorporate at a formal level the immersive and performative aesthetics of these technologies. The Bildung of Hans Castorp and Harry Haller unfolds through sensory experiences that challenge traditional models of intellectual and spiritual formation, reflecting a broader shift in cultural reception. By overcoming the dichotomy between body and mind, both novels anticipate a new literary anthropology, wherein fiction critically engages with mass media and assimilates their expressive modes. Rather than signalling the decline of the novel form, this medial openness positions The Magic Mountain and Steppenwolf as early intermedial experiments, offering innovative ways to reimagine literature’s aesthetic and cultural function within technological modernity.

Abstract
Rather than signalling the decline of the novel form, this medial openness positions The Magic Mountain and Steppenwolf as early intermedial experiments, offering innovative ways to reimagine literature’s aesthetic and cultural function within technological modernity.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
