This paper takes into examination a specific ritual of preventive defilement and subsequent re-consecration of the land. It is based on ethnographic material gathered through participant observation and interviews in Bucharest in 2015 and 2016. The article recounts the strategies, theories, and practices enacted by a few anti-mosque activists who, in order to thwart the construction of a mosque in the Romanian capital, first spoiled the respective land by burying pieces of pork, and then built a Christian-Orthodox shrine on it, planting crosses and placing icons and Romanian flags.

Abstract
This paper takes into examination a specific ritual of preventive defilement and subsequent re-consecration of the land. It is based on ethnographic material gathered through participant observation and interviews in Bucharest in 2015 and 2016. The article recounts the strategies, theories, and practices enacted by a few anti-mosque activists who, in order to thwart the construction of a mosque in the Romanian capital, first spoiled the respective land by burying pieces of pork, and then built a Christian-Orthodox shrine on it, planting crosses and placing icons and Romanian flags.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
