Abstract

In the late 1930s, some of the most prominent architects of the Fascist era took part in designing the 1942 Universal Exposition in Rome. With the outbreak of World War II, work slowed, and by 1943 all construction was abandoned. The project remained in limbo until the early 1950s, when both new and established figures relaunched it, leading to the creation of one of Rome’s most notable 20th-century districts, primarily residential and administrative, and host of the 1960 Olympics. As the 2000s approached, the area saw further transformations. Today, nearly ninety years after the first stone was laid, it is necessary to reflect on protective measures to preserve not only its architecture but also its broader landscape, built in both the first and second half of the twentieth century. Future developments and changes risk undermining key aspects of this heritage. Therefore, it is from the recognition of the values to be preserved and the challenges ahead that the paper will attempt to outline possible operational perspectives for safeguarding and enhancing this legacy.
