This outstanding volume collects 18 essays on René Descartes’ L’Homme, the physiological treatise he wrote around 1632–33, which was published posthumously in 1662 in a Latin translation and in 1664 in the original French. These two editions vary significantly, and the text has had a tortuous history. In shedding new light on this history, the volume significantly contributes to the understanding of Descartes’ physiology and its position within his own philosophy of nature and early-modern medicine more broadly.
