Fare epoca. Un commento agli ultimi capitoli di Land und Meer di Carl Schmitt

The article comments on the last chapters of Carl Schmitt’s Land und Meer, attempting both to interpret and actualise its fundamental questions. The concept of “epoch” and the historical power of the human being to “make epoch” in symbiosis with the natural elements is taken up to consider whether this is still possible – for Schmitt and in general – after the epoch of the sea and after the British hegemony of the oceans. Fundamental is the status that Leviathan assumes: while the Leviathan advocated by the British Empire is still the “great fish” of the biblical tradition, later, with the rise of industrial capitalism and the technological and economic configuration of war, Leviathan becomes machine. The question then arises whether, in the age of the machine Leviathan, it is still possible to “make epoch” according to Schmitt’s criterion.

L’articolo commenta gli ultimi capitoli di Land und Meer di Carl Schmitt, cercando sia di interpretarne sia di attualizzarne le questioni fondamentali. Si assume il concetto di “epoca” e la potenza storica dell’essere umano di “fare epoca” in simbiosi con gli elementi naturali per considerare se ciò sia ancora possibile – per Schmitt e in generale – dopo l’epoca del mare e dopo l’egemonia britannica degli oceani. Fondamentale risulta lo statuto che assume il Leviatano: se il Leviatano propugnato dall’impero britannico è ancora il “grande pesce” della tradizione biblica, in seguito, con l’affermarsi del capitalismo industriale e con la configurazione tecnologica ed economica della guerra, il Leviatano diventa macchina. Si pone quindi la questione se, nell’epoca del Leviatano macchina, è ancora possibile “fare epoca” secondo il criterio di Schmitt.
