The essay traces the emergence of radio as a mass medium from its military origins during the First World War to its consolidation in the 1920s as a new sonic public sphere, emphasizing its decisive role in reshaping the perception of time, communication, and culture. Through a historical and theoretical perspective, radio is interpreted not merely as a technical innovation but as a social system capable of creating “imagined communities,” generating new narrative forms, and reorganizing collective listening practices. The introduction also outlines the contributions of the issue, devoted to radio drama, modernism, and the relationships between voice, writing, and auditory imagination, as well as to the documentary and political functions of broadcasting in the twentieth century. Finally, it highlights radio’s ability to reinvent itself within the digital ecosystem, preserving its cultural identity through hybridization with podcasts, streaming, and voice-based technologies.

The introduction also outlines the contributions of the issue, devoted to radio drama, modernism, and the relationships between voice, writing, and auditory imagination, as well as to the documentary and political functions of broadcasting in the twentieth century.
