This essay investigates the representation of carceral space in Italian narrative cinema of the past fifteen years, with particular emphasis on its function as a symbolic lens through which to interrogate broader cultural, social, and even existential questions that transcend the immediate domain of imprisonment. By engaging with a wide corpus of films, the study delineates the principal representational and narrative strategies mobilized in this context.
