This paper examines the public participation phase in the development of the new map of Rome, carried out between October 2025 and January 2026 through the official Rome Capital platform. Drawing on 4,036 contributions submitted by residents, local committees, and civic groups, the analysis reveals a markedly uneven distribution of participation, outlining a distinct geography of civic engagement. Content analysis shows that the debate primarily revolves around neighbourhood identity, boundaries, and naming, reflecting a lived geography that complements and, at times, challenges official administrative divisions. The findings suggest that participation should not be considered a marginal component, but rather a central element in a broader technical, cultural, and political process of redefining urban space.

Abstract
This paper examines the public participation phase in the development of the new map of Rome, carried out between October 2025 and January 2026 through the official Rome Capital platform. Drawing on 4,036 contributions submitted by residents, local committees, and civic groups, the analysis reveals a markedly uneven distribution of participation, outlining a distinct geography of civic engagement. Content analysis shows that the debate primarily revolves around neighbourhood identity, boundaries, and naming, reflecting a lived geography that complements and, at times, challenges official administrative divisions. The findings suggest that participation should not be considered a marginal component, but rather a central element in a broader technical, cultural, and political process of redefining urban space.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
