The research project originates from the observation of the social and cultural dynamics currently affecting major Western museums. As key actors in the history of architecture and the city, museums constitute spaces in which Western culture represents and celebrates itself through architectural languages and through the meanings ascribed to displayed objects. However, in the present historical moment, the Western museum seems to embody a monumental and distorting mirror of contemporary society: while, on the one hand, it bears witness to cultural research, on the other the fractures associated with the crisis of Western culture are becoming increasingly disproportionate and unsettling. This phenomenon is particularly evident in ethnographic museums which, as spaces dedicated to the representation of alterity, embody an intrinsic complexity often rooted in the cultural premises of colonialism. Drawing on the long tradition of postcolonial studies and recent research on decolonial practices, this thesis identifies the exercise of classificatory knowledge within museum narratives as a problematic core underpinning the construction of otherness. On this basis, it becomes necessary to initiate a reflection on how museum architecture, inevitably intertwined with these issues, engages with this conflictual condition that is peculiar to our time. Building on a historical and critical analysis of the architectural evolution of the museum and on the construction of a multidisciplinary theoretical framework, the study adopts an analytical-comparative method to examine a limited yet significant set of case studies. The aim of the research is to identify the mechanisms through which architectural and exhibition design have constructed narratives grounded in specific value systems, as well as the architectural attempts to deconstruct those very narratives.

Abstract
The aim of the research is to identify the mechanisms through which architectural and exhibition design have constructed narratives grounded in specific value systems, as well as the architectural attempts to deconstruct those very narratives.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
