The medieval tradition of Archimedes, which began in the Byzantine world with Leo the Mathematician, was further enriched by translations produced in the Western world (William of Moerbeke in the 13th century and Iacopo da San Cassiano during the Humanist period). Archimedes’ works enjoyed a certain popularity amongst humanists, mathematicians and artists (including Piero della Francesca) in the fifteenth century and were finally published — in both Greek and Latin (a translation by Iacopo da San Cassiano revised by Johannes Müller of Königsberg, known as Regiomontanus) — in the first edition published in Basel in 1544.
