This article offers a transnational reading of disappearance through the intersection between Argentina’s recent past and the contemporary Mediterranean. From a situated place of enunciation in the Mediterranean, understood as a “necro-sea”, it examines the displacements of the paradigm of disappearance toward current forms of border violence, media invisibilization, and the dehumanization of migrants. Drawing on Gabriel Gatti, Pilar Calveiro, Judith Butler, Étienne Tassin, Iain Chambers, and other authors, the article approaches disappearance as a regime for the production of absence and as a technology for governing human mobility. Within this framework, artistic and documentary representations make it possible to question the ways in which memory is activated in the present. The article focuses especially on Damián Olivito’s documentary El cielo sobre Riace (2020), in which hospitality, migratory memory, and the restitution of faces, names, and stories become practices of resistance against disappearance. Riace thus emerges as a laboratory for other epistemologies of dwelling, articulating memory, representation, and concrete forms of coexistence.
