The presidential elections of 2024 have contributed to write a new chapter of US History which has its roots in the political, social and cultural experience of the country. In order to analyze the current situation, this essay draws on history and on the historiography that has amply dealt with the periodic crises that have contributed to shape the US. Relying on the seminal work of prominent historians Richard Hofstadter and Robert Wiebe, the essay reviews the more recent works of historians, political scientists and sociologists to show how the current emergency is not unique and unfathomable.
