The drainage and reclamation of the Agro Romano lasted around fifty years, from the end of the 19th century until the 1930s, and was one of the most important and successful episodes in Italy’s history of land reclamations. It profoundly transformed the character of the vast uncultivated and unpopulated territory which lay on the outskirts of Rome. This article focuses on the territory which borders the Ostiense quarter, examining the transformations which took place in this portion of the Agro Romano; with the help of sources from the Associations for the Reclamation of the Agro, the article highlights, in particular, certain elements regarding the destination of the concessions granted by the State mainly after 1922 to benefit the value of the landholdings, their beneficiaries and the property market.
