The aim of this work is to analyse the use of ille in the veterinary treaty Mulomedicina, probably composed in the second half of the IV A.D. by a certain Chiron. It will be proposed that, even in the absence of morphological distinctions, ille presents the syntactic features of three different categories that is (a) the anaphoric demonstrative ille, which turns into the definite article; (b) the strong pronoun, which is merged in the NP and is realized in the DP due to a syntactic movement; (c) the weak pronoun from which the clitic pronoun develops in Romance.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the use of ille in the veterinary treaty Mulomedicina, probably composed in the second half of the IV A.D. by a certain Chiron. It will be proposed that, even in the absence of morphological distinctions, ille presents the syntactic features of three different categories that is (a) the anaphoric demonstrative ille, which turns into the definite article; (b) the strong pronoun, which is merged in the NP and is realized in the DP due to a syntactic movement; (c) the weak pronoun from which the clitic pronoun develops in Romance.
