After the terrorist attacks of 11th September 2001, the world speaks again of the West – its values, its enemies, its supporters. Ten long years of attacks, massacres and wars have been dominated by this debate. In The Second Plane (2008) Martin Amis offers his own response to the collapse of the Twin Towers: a collection of essays, articles and two short stories, which raises uncomfortable questions about our existence in a supposedly “bipolar world” – and about literature’s right to prey upon collective tragedy. The article examines the British reception of "The Second Plane" and explores some of the issues that have literally divided the world. It also analyzes the rhetoric (the vocabulary, the logical or pseudo-logical conclusions) of those who consider themselves, like Amis, defenders of the West.
