Nuovi scavi in corso a Sentinum: una prima interpretazione del contesto

In this paper the Author proposes some preliminary interpretation of the whole set of data about the Roman city of Sentinum. One of the most important issues, also much debated by scholars, concerns the date of the founding of the city, that can not be connected by archaeological data with the chronology of the so-called ‘Battle of Nations’, fought in 295 BC. Archaeological evidences of late II century BC attest the existence of the town, surrounded by walls and apparently located in an area not built before. With regard to the latest periods of development, which must be considered as the fundamental stages of urban growth in Sentinum, two phases can be accurately determined. The first dates back to the Augustan Age, when a tetrasyle temple was built at the intersection of Decumanus and Cardo Maximus; the second phase, during the first half of the II century AD, saw a major urban development, as attested by the construction of a large public Therma in the southern suburban area of the town.

In questo saggio l’Autrice propone alcune prime interpretazioni di carattere generale sulla città romana di Sentinum. Uno dei temi più importanti, anche molto dibattuto, riguarda la data di fondazione della città, che stanti i dati archeologici, non risulta collegabile alla data della cosiddetta ‘Battaglia delle Nazioni’, combattuta nel territorio sentinate nel 295 a. C.. La città attestata dai resti archeologici con tutta probabilità risale alla fine del II secolo a. C. ed è una città di fondazione, che apparentemente sorge su di un terreno non edificato in precedenza, ed è cinta di mura. Tra le successive fasi di sviluppo che sembrano costituire le tappe fondamentali dello sviluppo urbano di Sentinum, due sono sicuramente riconoscibili al momento: una fase di epoca augustea, testimoniata dalla costruzione del tempio tetrastilo all’incrocio tra il Cardine Massimo e il Decumano Massimo e una fase di inizio II secolo d. C., durante la quale molto probabilmente la città ebbe il momento del suo massimo sviluppo, testimoniato dalla costruzione di un grande edificio termale pubblico nel settore extraurbano meridionale.
