Environmental laws which affect the oil sector are among the most conspicuous of all the main industrial sectors because of their number and because of the size of the interventions which are required. These norms partly concern the quality of products and also the protection of the territory in relation to the activities plants, particularly refineries (they also regard logistics, transportation and distribution). In the specific case of refineries norms regulate emissions, safety and health of workers and the protection of the surrounding environment. A great many of the norms have already been in effect for years at the community level and applied, with some adaptations, (sometimes becoming more severe) to the Italian context. The resources the oil industry commits to environmental aims has grown over time and currently accounts for the largest portion of annual investments.
