In recent years there has been considerable activity in the digitisation of Europe’s cultural heritage, for creation of network-accessible databases, in implementing strategies for shared global standards and for use in Web GIS programmes. The current research complements this trend by developing an innovative methodology for investigation and increased awareness of urban heritage. Beginning from existing methodologies, it further experiments, tests and validates to arrive at original, newly productive applications of ICT in cultural heritage documentation. The focus of the research is Rome’s historic centre and the development processes that have generated the current complex reality. The research develops knowledge processes about the city based in analysis of urban transformation through archival historical investigation, maps and documents analysis, typological study and architectural-structural recording, all correlated to modifications in the urban fabric. To permit more accessible and immediate reading of this process we choose 3D modelling, to communicate and facilitate the comparison between successive eras, and to reveal, recognise and transmit the values of past cityscapes. The 3D modelling tool permits us to visualize the research contents and assemble and order all the information in a single product. The study deals with urban environments that are deeply changed and deprived of their original identity, with the aims of preserving the remaining cultural heritage, including the underlying meanings, and “virtually rebuilding” their previous characteristic features. The contribution stresses the importance of scientific supervision of the new information and communications technologies, based on heritage conservation theories and knowledge. It also presents the historical-analytical reconstruction methodology and the principles of authenticity applied to ensure reliability in the work.
Negli ultimi anni vi è stata una notevole attività nella digitalizzazione del patrimonio culturale europeo, per la creazione di banche dati accessibili in rete, nell’ampliamento di strategie per definire standard globali condivisi e per l'utilizzo in programmi Web GIS. Il lavoro di ricerca che si presenta integra questa tendenza attraverso lo sviluppo di una metodologia innovativa per l'indagine che consenta una maggiore consapevolezza del patrimonio urbano. Partendo da metodologie esistenti, vengono compiuti ulteriori esperimenti, test e convalide per arrivare ad applicazioni originali ed efficaci delle ICT nella documentazione del patrimonio culturale. Oggetto della ricerca è il centro storico di Roma ed i processi storico formativi che hanno condotto alla attuale complessità urbana. La ricerca sviluppa processi di conoscenza della città fondati sull’analisi delle trasformazioni urbane attraverso l'indagine storico-archivistica, l’analisi della documentazione cartografica ed iconografica, lo studio tipologico ed il riconoscimento architettonico delle strutture. Per favorire una lettura più accessibile ed immediata di questo processo si è deciso di adottare la modellazione 3D, che permette di comunicare e di facilitare il confronto tra epoche successive, e di rivelare, riconoscere e trasmettere i valori dei paesaggi urbani del passato. Questo strumento consente di visualizzare i contenuti della ricerca e di riunire ed ordinare tutte le informazioni in un unico prodotto. Lo studio si occupa di ambienti urbani che sono profondamente cambiati e privati della loro identità, con l’obiettivo di conservare il patrimonio culturale rimanente, il suo implicito significato e “ricomporre virtualmente” la sua fisionomia originaria. Il contributo sottolinea l'importanza della supervisione scientifica delle nuove tecnologie d'informazione e comunicazione sulla base delle teorie riguardanti la conservazione del patrimonio. Presenta inoltre la metodologia storico-analitica applicata per la ricostruzione ed i principi di autenticità adottati per garantire l'affidabilità del lavoro.
