This contribution is aimed at presenting the emerging results of a research study on the development of FL competence and motivation of a group of young Italian learners monitored using language tests, questionnaires, interviews, observation and self-assessment protocols. Participants were followed first during five years of the primary cycle (age 6-10) and then during the last year of middle school (age 13). The study is partly derived from the longitudinal transnational Early Language Learning in Europe (ELLiE) project (Enever, 2011) and follows part of those learners in the middle school.

Abstract
