This paper examines some texts of various literary genres (not only ascribed to ecclesiastical historiography in a strict sense) and from different geographical locations (Proconsular Africa, Italy, Gaul, Hispania, insular regions), which, in the period of transition between the late Christian antiquity and the early Middle Ages (but not later than 735, when Venerable Bede died, a date usually considered the end of the patristic era), pass on a representation of the image and the role played by the emperor Constantine the Great within general history and, in particular, within the Church's history. It focuses almost exclusively on texts from the West, without neglecting the influence of the Greek texts translated into Latin (for example, the Historia Ecclesiastica Tripartita). Beyond their specific value as historical sources, the texts considered contribute, in their own way, to providing a glimpse of the most recurrent traits in the image of Constantine, which continued circulating during the long centuries of the Middle Ages.
