The small historical centers in Italy are, since the post-war period, victim of increasing de-population and partial or total abandonment with very important consequences. Today, the necessity is strongly felt to bring back to life these boroughs as places where the greatest part of the socio-cultural identity, of the architectural and environmental values coagulate. This report analyzes the phenomenon and presents a recent experience finalized to the rehabilitation of a small historical center: Monasterace in the Calabria region. The project, carried on also with the involvement of the population, has achieved the creation of guide-lines that, starting from the knowledge of the material culture and the pre-modern con-structive techniques characterizing the historical built fabric, suggest interventions for the architectural and urban restoration. The aim is to start up a virtuous process that, while preserving the beauty of the ancient cultural heritage, will limit at the same time a further land consumption.

Abstract
The aim is to start up a virtuous process that, while preserving the beauty of the ancient cultural heritage, will limit at the same time a further land consumption.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
