The aim of this paper is the investigation of lock release gravity currents by Particle Image Velocimetry. An experiment was performed and the gravity current’s profile was detected by an image analysis technique. In agreement with the literature three different phases were observed in the gravity current’s dynamics. The same experiment was repeated in order to measure the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields by Particle Image Velocimetry. Interfacial instabilities were recognized by vector maps and horizontal velocity fields and a decrease of the horizontal velocity from the head to the tail was observed. Vorticity fields show two main areas of positive and negative vorticity at the interface between the two fluids and near the bottom, respectively. Horizontal velocity profiles show that the maximum velocity is positioned within the head of the gravity current.
